If you are thinking about counselling, you probably have some questions. Below are the answers to the things people ask me most often. If there is anything else you would like to know, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
What happens at the first session?
Our initial appointment is free and lasts 60 minutes. This gives you the opportunity to see whether you feel we can work together on whatever is troubling you. I also need to be certain that I am the best person to support you with your difficulties. There is no obligation to continue after this first meeting - it is simply a chance for us to get to know each other and for you to ask any questions.
How long does each session last?
Sessions last for around 50 minutes. We will usually meet once a week, at the same time and day each week, although I can accommodate different schedules where needed, for example if you work shifts.
How much does counselling cost?
Sessions are £60 per individual. I also work with BUPA Private health care and Healix private healthcare as a recognised supplier, so you may be able to get referred through your provider. If you would like to use your private healthcare, please contact your support team and ask to be referred to me. Once you have pre-authorisation for your treatment, please either email or call me and we can arrange a first session.
Is everything I say confidential?
Yes. Everything discussed in our sessions is kept in the strictest confidence. As a member of the BACP, I follow their Ethical Framework for Good Practice. I attend regular supervision where I may discuss my work, but I will never disclose your name or anything that would enable you to be identified. I keep brief notes after each session which are securely stored and destroyed three years after our work together has finished.
Do you offer online sessions?
Yes, I am able to offer online video counselling. However, I would prefer to meet face to face for our introductory session, as I believe it gives us both a better feel for each other and helps build the therapeutic relationship.
What areas do you cover?
I am based in Twickenham, Middlesex and see clients from across the surrounding areas including Richmond, Teddington, Hampton, Kingston, Whitton, Isleworth, and Hounslow. My practice is at 62 Fourth Cross Road, Twickenham, TW2 5EP.
What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
Counselling often focuses on specific issues and tends to be shorter term, while psychotherapy takes a deeper look at underlying patterns and may be longer term. As a psychotherapeutic counsellor, I blend both approaches - working with you on immediate concerns while also exploring the deeper patterns that may be contributing to your difficulties.
How do I know if I need counselling?
If you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, or struggling with a life event such as bereavement, relationship difficulties, or a major transition, counselling can help. Many people find it useful simply to have a safe, confidential space to talk. There is no wrong time to seek support - if something is troubling you and you feel you could benefit from talking it through, that is reason enough.
Can counselling help with anxiety?
Yes, counselling is very effective for anxiety. I use integrative and CBT approaches to help you understand the root causes of your anxiety, develop coping strategies, and make lasting changes. Many of my clients have experienced significant improvement in their anxiety levels through our work together.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No, you do not need a GP referral to see me. You can contact me directly to arrange an initial consultation. However, if you are using private health insurance through BUPA or Healix, you may need pre-authorisation from your provider before our sessions can begin.
