Self-care has become something of a buzzword, but at its heart it is a very simple idea: deliberately doing things that support your physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. It is not selfish or indulgent - it is essential.
Many of the people I work with in counselling are running on empty. They are busy looking after everyone else - their families, their colleagues, their friends - and have forgotten to look after themselves. When I ask them what they do for themselves, the answer is often “nothing” or “I don't have time.”
Why Self-Care Matters
Think of self-care as maintenance rather than repair. When you regularly top up your emotional reserves, you are better equipped to handle life's challenges when they come. When you consistently neglect your own needs, even small difficulties can feel overwhelming.
Burnout, anxiety, and depression often build gradually. They rarely arrive overnight. Regular self-care can help you stay resilient and catch early warning signs before things escalate.
Practical Self-Care Ideas
Self-care looks different for everyone. It does not need to be elaborate or expensive. Here are some ideas to get you started:
Physical Self-Care
- Go for a walk, even a short one - fresh air makes a difference
- Prioritise sleep - aim for a consistent bedtime routine
- Eat regular meals and stay hydrated
- Move your body in a way you enjoy, whether that is swimming, yoga, or dancing in your kitchen
Emotional Self-Care
- Allow yourself to feel your emotions rather than pushing them away
- Talk to someone you trust about how you are feeling
- Write in a journal - it does not need to be eloquent, just honest
- Set boundaries - it is okay to say no
Mental Self-Care
- Take breaks from your phone and social media
- Do something creative or learn something new
- Spend time in nature - even a local park counts
- Practice being present - notice what is around you right now
Social Self-Care
- Spend time with people who lift you up
- Step back from relationships that drain you
- Ask for help when you need it - this is a strength, not a weakness
When Self-Care Is Not Enough
Self-care is a vital part of looking after your mental health, but there are times when it is not enough on its own. If you are experiencing persistent low mood, overwhelming anxiety, difficulty functioning day to day, or you simply feel that something is not right, it may be time to seek professional support.
Reaching out to a counsellor is itself an act of self-care - one of the most powerful ones you can make. It takes courage to ask for help, and that courage is something to be proud of.
Start Small
You do not need to overhaul your entire life overnight. Pick one small thing from the list above and try it this week. Self-care is not about perfection - it is about consistently showing up for yourself, even in small ways.
