What Is Integrative Counselling?

When people begin looking for a counsellor, they often come across different types of therapy - CBT, psychodynamic, person-centred, humanistic - and feel uncertain about which approach is right for them. Integrative counselling removes that pressure by drawing on multiple therapeutic models and tailoring the approach to you as an individual.

How Does Integrative Counselling Work?

Rather than following one single therapeutic model, an integrative counsellor is trained in several approaches and blends them together depending on what would be most helpful for you. This might mean using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help you manage anxious thoughts, while also drawing on person-centred techniques to create a safe, non-judgemental space where you feel truly heard.

The key principle is that no single approach works for everyone. We are all different, and what helps one person may not help another. Integrative counselling respects that individuality and adapts accordingly.

What Approaches Might Be Used?

As an integrative relational psychotherapeutic counsellor, I may draw on any combination of the following during our work together:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) - helps you identify and change unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviours
  • Person-centred therapy - provides unconditional positive regard, empathy, and genuineness to help you feel safe and accepted
  • Psychodynamic therapy - explores how past experiences and unconscious patterns influence your present feelings and relationships
  • Humanistic approaches - focuses on personal growth, self-awareness, and your potential to make positive changes
  • Relational therapy - looks at how your relationships with others, and the therapeutic relationship itself, can support your healing

What Issues Can It Help With?

Because integrative counselling is flexible by nature, it can be helpful for a wide range of difficulties, including:

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Depression and low mood
  • Bereavement and loss
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Low self-esteem and confidence
  • Life transitions and major changes
  • Burnout and work-related stress
  • Trauma and past experiences

Why Choose an Integrative Counsellor?

Choosing an integrative counsellor means you are not locked into one way of working. As we progress through our sessions, the approach may evolve as your needs change. What matters most is that the therapy works for you - and integrative counselling is designed to do exactly that.
